High altitudes and rich volcanic soils in western Rwanda help create ideal conditions for growing specialty coffee. In the southwestern corner of the country, the Nyakarenzo Coffee Washing Station (CWS) collects coffee cherries from 542 small-scale growers in the surrounding Rusizi District. CWS is owned and operated by the exporter Rwacof, which in partnership with the Kahawatu Foundation provides the producers with training on best agricultural practices and environmental conservation. Nyakarenzo CWS processes coffee using both washed and natural methods, and dries it on raised beds to promote air circulation. We love this fully washed offering for its complexity and notes of dried cherry, dried cranberry, black tea, and semisweet chocolate. Enjoy!
